Dr Marina Lostal

Co-Initiator of the Project Sunflowers
A Senior Lecturer at the School of Law of the University of Essex (UK) and the Director of Human Rights Postgraduate Programme at the University of Essex and Co-Deputy Director of its Human Rights Centre . She holds a PhD from the European University Institute and an LLM from the University of Cambridge. She is admitted to the Bar in Spain and is also an accredited mediator. She specialises in the rights of victims in international criminal law, the protection of cultural heritage in armed conflict and animal law. Between 2017 and 2020 she worked at the International Criminal Court (The Hague) in the realm of victims, first as a Court-appointed reparations expert in the Al Mahdi case, and then providing advice to the Trust Fund for Victims in various cases. She has worked as a consultant for several organisations, including UNESCO and Geneva Call, and delivered training to diverse audiences including judges, law clerks, peacekeepers and armed non-State actors.
